Standards allow interoperability, accessibility and reusability of Web-based learning content. blueU has produced many e-learning courses that adhere to such standards.
SCORM
One of the leading standards used in the development of e-learning course material is ‘The Sharable Courseware Object Reference Model’ or SCORM. Developed by the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative to promote the interoperability of learning objects and Learning Management Systems (LMS’). Based on several other specifications including the Aviation Industry CBT committee (AICC) Computer managed instruction (CMI) and Instructional Management System (IMS) specifications, the SCORM specification regulates how e-learning content and LMS’ communicate with each other for tracking student progress and also defines the structure of a learning object.
SCORM currently provides an Interface for communicating information about a learner’s interaction with the course content, a content packaging specification that enables interoperability of learning content, a standard set of meta-data elements that can be used to describe learning content and a set of standard sequencing rules which can be applied to the organisation of the learning content. The technical standards used by SCORM work equally well locally, regionally or globally.

AICC
The AICC CMI specification is the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC) Computer Managed Instruction (CMI) Guidelines for Interoperability.
The AICC CMI specification provides a means by which developers of technology-based training and LMS’ can design products that:
- Use a common means of describing and communicating student progress data so that products from different organisations may interoperate
- Use a common means of describing the structure and behaviours of learning objects so that they can be exported and imported by different LMS’.
This specification provides the mechanism by which custom-designed learning can be published to LMS’ and can communicate with them for launch, control, and tracking purposes.

LRN
In an effort to improve learning object portability, the Instructional Management Systems (IMS) Global Learning Consortium produced the IMS Content Packaging Specification, which standardises how content authors define the structure and behaviour of online content.
Microsoft’s implementation of version 1.0 of the specification – the Microsoft® Learning Resource Interchange (LRN pronounced “learn”) 2.0 Toolkit – plays a key role in LMS initiatives.
blueU’s development methodology allows for analysis, design, development testing and validation of such standards used within a course. When it comes to the standardisation of e-learning material, blueU can deliver a solution designed to meet your requirements.
